Back in April 2018, Nick Knowles and his team undertook a build in Hessle to help struggling father Darren Hudson and his three sons, Michael Ledger, Harvey Hudson and Ollie Ledger, who have had a difficult time. Darren was devastatingly left paralysed from the waist down following a serious injury to his spinal cord.
Tragically, Darren also lost his wife just months later. Darren went from being an active roofer to having get used to life in a wheelchair and being forced to share his son Oliver’s bedroom downstairs.
Hundreds of local volunteers came together to redesign Darren’s house, making it more suitable for his personal situation.
Nick Knowles mentioned it has been a brilliant project to work on and went on to say: "It’s been the most amazing ten days," he said. "We have had hundreds of people come and help us out, hundreds of trades working for us hundreds of suppliers giving us stuff. It’s a proper community effort."
Outdoor Living were extremely privileged to be able to contribute to the amazing project. Our Sales Director Paul Margerison received a call from the DIY SOS team who told him about the upcoming project in Hessle, East Yorkshire.
Without hesitation, Paul completed the online application to donate a hot tub for Darren and his family. Paul said "It's the least we can do. As a company we have always done what we can to help the local community. When I heard about Darren's story and knew how much a hot tub could help him and his family, I knew we had to be involved".
Paul and Georgina (Project Manager) from Outdoor Living met with the DIY SOS team ahead of the Big Build to talk through all the plans and design ideas as well as discuss the best hot tub product for Darren and the family.
Georgina said "Access was a huge priority. We needed to ensure that all the family could easily and safely access the hot tub. The decision to add a hoist was made so that both Darren and Oliver could benefit from the hot tub".
"The benefits of Hydrotherapy, Aromatherapy and Mood Lighting are outstanding" added Paul. "The hot tub provided will bring all of these alive in their garden. The nice open foot well gives them plenty of room to manoeuvre and float around the the water. We simply feel privileged to provide such an essential product to a well deserving family. I hope that the hot tub brings them many years of happiness and relaxation".
